According to Hindu Mythology, this is the day Lord Brahma the creator of the universe, started the creation of the world.This day marks the beginning of Tamil New year, which is the first day of Chitterai month. It begins with a sight of thali prepared on the Puthandu Eve, which has auspicious things like gold, silver, beetle leaf, nuts and more, as a belief of a good start to the New Year that will ensure prosperity and happiness in the coming year. To mark the begining of the new year women and men adorn new traditional apparels like Kancheepuram sari, Pavada and Veshti respectively. They relish the best food inclusive of all flavors like sweet, sour and bitter symbolizing different aspects of life.
The culturaly rich people of Tamil Nadu follow rituals like waking up at the break of the dawn and decorating the entrance of the house with colourful Kolam patterns. Centre of the Kolam is decorated with a lamp called “Kuthuvillakku” in a belief that it would dispel darkness.
